Welcome

You have reached the website of Dane Alston, Ph.D. Scholar in the Division of Pacific and Asian History, Research School of Pacific and Asian History, Australian National University.

On this site you will find a brief description of who I am, what I am doing and what I have done. On top of this, the site will provide a number of links and resources that I have found useful for my research work. Hopefully other will also find these materials of use. As I am busy with doing the day to day work of researching my thesis, work on this web site falls low on the ladder of priorities. I will upload sections as I get to them, so please be patient.

What's new?

O6 September '06 (Wed.) - We are back from the Kyushu Workshop and our trip to Korea. It was a fabulous trip and we met many great people, not to mention buy lots of books. Now that I am back at ANU I wasted no time and jumped back into my reading, writing and translating. Busy, busy! On the website front, I added a quick links bar to the work station page so that you don't have to scroll down through the page. I am slowly getting the hang of this web design stuff, please be patient!

29 July '06 (Sat.) - I just added a link to gogobooks, an online Korean book shop search page, onto the work space page. Gogobooks allows you to search a number of second hand and commercial bookshops all in one go. As I am off to Japan and Korea next week I am trying to prepare a book wish list and this web site has been very very helpful. I will be back around the 21 August and will add more to the web site then. Ciao!

11 July '06 (Tue.) - This morning I came across a nifty feature of the Academy of Korean Studies web sites that I didn't know was there, namely their Glossary of Korean Studies. This book was published some years back and provided English gloss' of terminology related to Korean Studies. The AKS has now included the book on their website in a searchable format. I added the link to the work station page for those who are interested.

07 July '06 (Wed.) - Added links to the Korean and English versions of the North Korean "Choson t'ongshin (Á¶¼±Åë½Å)" on the news desk. What with all of their recent missiles activity!

05 July '06 (Wed.) - Added new links to the "news desk": google news Korea, and the two Korean online news sites Naver and Daum.

27 June '06 (Tue.) - Added the "news desk page" with links to a selection of on-line Korean newspapers. Will be expanded in the future to cover other news sources both in Korea and East Asia.

23 June '06 (Fri.) - Added the "under construction page" for pages I am still working on and also included a credits page to say thanks for the sites I have used in making this page. On the credits page you will also find links to sites where I found the templates and also the groovy Korean motifs. Lastly, I put up a first draft of the work station page with links and resources I frequently use in my research. Hope someone else finds them of some use too.

22 June '06 (Thurs.) - Well, to start with this whole foray into the web page world! This page is the second manifestation of my ANU web page and, like the other one, is still very much under construction. What you will find here is:
