Ownership of Australian media is highly concentrated [1, 2, 3, 4]. National and capital city newspapers are generally owned by either News Corporation or John Fairfax Holdings. This webpage uses tag clouds to show some of the differences between these two major news services. The size of a word or phrase in the cloud is relative to its frequency in the RSS feeds from the two sources.

The News Corp cloud is made from keywords in RSS feeds from The Australian newspaper's Editor's Choice The Australian Editor's Picks RSS feed (there is no top news RSS feed for The Australian). The Fairfax cloud comes from the Sydney Morning Herald top news headlines SMH top news headlines RSS feed. Click on a keyword in the tag clouds to show the corresponding story.

The method for making the tag clouds is complex and taken care of by Zoomclouds. In brief, the text of the RSS feeds are analysed by Zoomclouds' content analysis application and Yahoo's Content Analysis Service. The font sizes for the keywords in the clouds are calculated to be proportional to the popularity of the keywords in the RSS feeds. The 50 most popular keywords are shown in each cloud. There are no 'stop' words and the feeds are analysed every twenty-four hours. This page is best viewed using the Firefox web browser and may not work properly with other browsers.
