Welcome

Hugh White
Welcome to the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre. We are Australia’s oldest-established centre for the study of strategic, defence and wider security issues. Our aim has long been, and remains, to apply the rigour and discipline of good scholarship to the key public policy questions concerning Australia’s security and broader regional and global security questions.

Our key priorities at the SDSC are to deliver high-quality graduate teaching, publish top quality scholarly research, contribute to the national public debate on strategic, defence and wider security issues, and foster regional dialogue and interactions on security questions.

The SDSC reflects this focus through its staff, which includes people with extensive experience and distinguished standing in both the academic world and the world of public policy. We are especially fortunate to have among our strong cadre of Visiting Fellows a number of people who have served in very senior and responsible positions within Government and the Australian Defence Force.

Our Graduate Studies in Strategy and Defence Program is the largest program in the country, and one of the largest in the Asia-Pacific, specialising in security issues. We offer a range of Masters-level courses and have a very strong PhD program.

We hope you will find this website a helpful introduction to our work. Please contact us if you would like more information.
