Project summary
|
Vietnam’s craft villages are rural villages that specialise in the production of traditional crafts such as textiles, ceramics, fine arts and furniture, as well as newer activities such as agro-food processing and solid waste recycling. The craft villages have significantly contributed to the employment and income of farmers in rural areas. However, these achievements are tempered by the fact that majority of these craft villages are becoming a source of severe water pollution, often containing unsafe levels of toxic chemicals and heavy metals, with serious health implications.
The dispersed nature and small scale of these craft enterprises has prompted the Vietnamese government to trial community-based approaches to managing pollution. This project works with a key policy research agency in Vietnam to investigate the key drivers for water pollution from craft villages. It will review policy options to address water pollution while sustaining social and economic outcomes from craft enterprises, particularly the potential role of community-based approaches in conjunction with other measures.
