Project summary This research focuses on the irrigation management of the famous Balinese subak - socio-religious irrigation societies dealing with the cultivation of rice. The aim is to understand the major resource pressures which are being placed on these irrigation systems and the adaptive strategies that farmers are developing in response to these pressures. Fieldwork has been conducted in several subak in south-central Bali which share a common dam. Analysis of these case studies should tease out the key factors that build the resilience of these irrigation societies.
