Project summary The Integrated Conservation and Development (ICDP) model has been popularly used in conservation projects in developing countries since the early 1980s with poor results. A large body of literature supports the rationale that the next generation of conservation models must continue to retain the element of human welfare, such as the case with ICDPs, to be successful. My research will evaluate the newly proposed Kokoda Track Conservation Park in Papua New Guinea, contrasting it with a significant number of ‘ICDP failures’. It is an innovative approach which promotes trade-offs in conservation planning such as set down in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment combined with Payment for Eco-system Services (PES) such as: carbon sequestration, water catchment conservation, tourism and biodiversity conservation to landowner beneficiaries.
