Project documents
Project summary This project investigates the informal/black/small-scale mining practices in Indonesia and their significance to the community in surrounding areas. Although state definitions tend to delegitimize these activities, these practices are crucial for the survival of many people, especially those at the lower end of the economic scale, and represent forms of local resistance to state authority. Fieldwork will be conducted in Pongkor, Bangka and South Kalimantan, where informal or small-scale miners are extracting gold, tin and coal respectively, in order to assess differences in the local context of such mining activity and the potential for cooperation with big mining companies or other stakeholders.
