Project summary The economy of the local district of East Kutai in East Kalimantan, Indonesia heavily depends on the mining sector as primary provider of income, employment and purchase of goods and services. The corporate social responsibility programs of the Kaltim Prima Coal mining company have significantly contributed to developing the local economy. This research project aims at assessing the gap between the company's community program and the global framework put in place by several international agencies such as MMSD, GMI, ICMM, and EITI which examines the contribution of mining industries to the development of sustainable local communities. A model will also be developed to qualitatively and quantitatively highlight the critical issues for closing the mine in a sustainable manner.
