Influences on Groundwater
Project summary The low-lying coral atoll of Tarawa (Republic of Kiribati) is heavily dependent on groundwater for freshwater supplies. The availability, quality, and management of groundwater are central to secure sustainable development and poverty alleviation in this country. Nonetheless, increasing population level, growing per capita demand, contamination of groundwater supply through increasing levels of human wastes, and restricted land areas have gradually threatened the sustainability of the freshwater system and generated conflicts over the last decades between the Government and landowners. My project aims to provide the relevant information and tools to the local stakeholders, including institutional and local community representatives in order to facilitate the dialogue and devise together sustainable and equitable water management policies and practices through a Companion Modelling approach.
