Project summary Recent and dramatic land conversion programs in China aim to prevent large flooding events and to maintain dry season flows by increasing forest cover particularly on sloped agricultural land. The programs also aim to improve rural livelihoods. By assessing land use/land cover and measuring soil infiltration characteristics with other key soil parameters, this project aims to assess one aspect of the potential of these land use conversion programs to achieve their hydrological objectives in Yunnan Province. A component of this project will also involve examining water-related issues local rural communities have experienced pre and post afforestation, such as changes to water supplies for drinking or agriculture. Local knowledge and perceptions of land use and water relationships, as well as agricultural management practices concerning soil conservation will also be investigated.
