Climate Seminar Series - Building on Bali: climate change policy in Indonesia
Dr Frank Jotzo

Indonesia is by some estimates the world's third largest greenhouse gas emitter. Emissions from deforestation and peatlands are very large, and the energy sector is growing fast and shifting to emissions-intensive coal. Opportunities to cut back on emissions while maintaining economic growth are plentiful, but there are economic and social trade-offs and difficult institutional hurdles. Indonesia's policymakers have an increasing appetite to tackle these challenges, driven in part by expectations from the international community and the prospect of financing under international climate change mechanisms. How does greenhouse gas policy relate to Indonesia's development objectives, how can developed countries assist, and what might Indonesia's role be in post-Copenhagen international climate policy?
