Nawab Osman Mohammed

Nawab Osman Mohammed

Mohamed Nawab Mohamed Osman is a PHD candidate at the Department of Political and Social Change, Australian National University. He is concurrently an Associate Research Fellow with the Contemporary Islam Programme at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His research interests include the history and politics of Southeast and South Asian countries, transnational Islamic political movements such as the Hizb ut-Tahrir, Muslim Brotherhood and the Gulen movement and counter-terrorism.
Nawab obtained his BA (Hons) in political science and history as well as his MA from the National University of Singapore. He tutored several modules on Asian history during his MA. Between 2004-08, he conducted fieldwork in Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, the United Kingdom and Turkey. In October 2007, Nawab was invited by the US State Department to attend the International Visitor's Program on Counter-Terrorism and Foreign Policy.
Nawab has written papers, book chapters and journal articles related to his research interests. He is the co-editor (with Farhan Ali) of Igniting Thought, Unleashing Youth: Analysis and Reflections on Muslim Youth and Activism in Singapore (forthcoming 2008). Several of his articles will be appearing in forthcoming volumes of Southeast Asia Research and South Asia. He is a regular commentator on contemporary developments in Muslim countries. Some of his opinion pieces have been featured in The Straits Times (Singapore), Jakarta Post (Indonesia), The Nation (Thailand), The Daily Express (India),Today Zama (Turkey). He is proficient in several languages, including English, Malay, Indonesian and Urdu. Nawab is a social activist who is involved in civil society groups including the Association of Muslim Professionals Singapore and the Southeast Asian Forum for Islam and Democracy.
