Marzuki Mohamad

Marzuki Mohamad

Marzuki Mohamad is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political and Social Change, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies (RSPAS), at the Australian National University, since December 2003. Prior to that, he was a lecturer in the Department of Political Science, International Islamic University Malaysia. He obtained his LL.B (Hons) from the International Islamic University Malaysia (1998) and an MA in political science from the National University of Malaysia (2001).

Marzuki is currently working on his thesis entitled 'Law, Political Control and the New Politics of Legal Meanings in Malaysia'. His thesis deals mainly with the use of law by the Malaysian state as a means of political control and its impact on the proliferation of new legal meanings in the society.

Marzuki contributed articles on Malaysian politics to Malaysia's web-based news source, Malaysiakini.com, and also ASEAN Focus Group - ANU's Faculty of Asian Studies newsletter, Asian Analysis. His article, "Malaysia's 2004 general election: spectacular victory, continuing tensions" was published in Kasarinlan: The Philippine Journal of Third World Studies (Volume 19, No. 2, 2004). Some of his works are also due for publication in 2006, one of which is an article on legal coercion and UMNO's legitimacy, which will be published in an edited book.
