Biographical Statement
I am currently working on two books. The first examines state formation in Vietnam 1945-1954, relying on extensive archival collections in Aix-en-Provence and Hanoi, as well as published documents, memoirs and interviews. The second book is different from anything I have attempted before – an exploration of Vietnamese political culture in the 20th century. So far, I have drafted chapters on 'Concepts of the Self' and 'The Politics of the Family', with other chapters on the village, the state, political ritual and symbolism, and the intelligentsia in various stages of consolidation.
Research Interests
