Biographical Statement

Hartmut A. Holzknecht head and shoulders
I am currently a Visiting Fellow in the Resource Management in Asia Pacific Program and have been involved in social science research and development activities in the South Pacific (mainly Papua New Guinea) for nearly 30 years. This has been in academic and applied research, academic-level teaching, in private enterprise and the provincial public service in Papua New Guinea and in a wide range of consulting activities. The latter have included shorter and longer-term involvement in work for the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank, AusAID, the European Community, the Government of Papua New Guinea, private enterprise, non-governmental organizations, Australian and Papua New Guinea universities, and Papua New Guinea community groups. This range of activities has taken place in a number of provinces in Papua New Guinea, and, more recently, also in Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga. Besides maintaining ongoing links and involvements in a number of those countries, I am presently a member (representing Oceania) on the IUCN Inter-Commission Task Force on Local Communities and Protected Areas as well as on the editorial committee of the publication series Our Common Future (published by RICS Foundation, United Kingdom).

Research Interests

My present main research interest is in community-level management of natural and human resources, associated systems and institutions. This covers land, forestry, agriculture, inshore fisheries and associated community involvements and developments. I am currently preparing a research project 'Land Issues in Melanesia: Foundations of Governance and Security in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu? to begin work in the South Pacific region in 2003.
