Israel, America, and the Ancestors: Spiritual Warfare in a Pentecostal Denomination in Solomon Islands

Abstract:

'Spiritual Warfare' is central to the teaching and practice of the Christian Outreach Centre (COC), a Pentecostal denomination in Solomon Islands. COC battle rhetoric consistently compares Christian believers to two military powers - the Biblical nation of Israel, and the United States Armed Forces. Reference to kastom warfare is significant in its absence. This paper pursues two objectives in analyzing COC war motifs: to understand how believers target 'conflict' on community and global levels; to understand how they situate themselves as Christian Solomon Islanders among nations and histories.
