The Qing Withering State and Its Consequences
Dr Kent Deng, LSE, University of London

A Fellow of Royal Historical Society, Dr Deng is interested in the rise of the literati in the economic life of pre-modern China; the maritime economic history of pre-modern China; and the economic role of the Chinese peasantry. His most recent publications include "Movers and shakers of knowledge in China during the Ming-Qing period" in the volume Technology in China, edited with Jerry Liu and Ian Inkster, and his monograph State-building and Economic Performance in Modern China, c.1800-2000 (Princeton University Press, 2009).
