The Northeast Asia Program, established in 1988, has confirmed in the subsequent years the need for its creation to redress under-representation of contemporary Northeast Asian studies in the Australian National University (ANU). As the Australian national interest in economic, political and security links with Northeast Asia intensified over that period, the Program became an important focal point for Australian research and discussion (national and international) on the international effects of developments in that region.
