PhD Studies with SSGM

State Society and Governance in Melanesia

SSGM provides a limited number of places for doctoral students in the social sciences to undertake research that is closely aligned with the research interests of the SSGM program. Given the small size of SSGM and the number of available supervisors, we are currently restricted to between 1 and 2 PhD admissions per year.

Our criteria for admitting a PhD scholar for SSGM supervision are:

  1. evidence of an outstanding academic and applied research record,
  2. a detailed research proposal (1-2 pages) identifying the subject of the proposed research, the main questions the research seeks to answer, an outline of the proposed methodology, and an indicative timetable for completion within 3 years consistent with university requirements,
  3. the agreement of a full-time SSGM research fellow with the relevant research interests and competencies to supervise the PhD scholar; and
  4. strong endorsement of the applicant by at least one internationally recognised scholar.

Admission will occur only after extensive consultation between the applicant and the potential supervisor. However, decisions regarding applications for admission will be taken by the SSGM Teaching Committee. Applicants should also provide copies of relevant academic publications. While SSGM can only admit a small number of PhD scholars for direct supervision, SSGM research staff may be available to serve as advisers to PhD scholars enrolled in other parts of the university.

The SSGM coordinator of postgraduate studies is:
Dr Sinclair Dinnen sinclair.dinnen@anu.edu.au

Disciplines represented within SSGM include: anthropology, international relations, history, law and political science. SSGM's research priorities are specified in the Strategic Plan, while the interests of research staff can be viewed on their individual profiles.

All applicants need to fulfil the ANU's criteria for postgraduate study and follow the specified university procedure for admission. Further details can be accessed on the university website at: http://studyat.anu.edu.au/
