Enrolment and Fees

Admission

Admission to MAAPD Degree candidature

Students can commence MAAPD in the first or second semester of any year.

Students can be enrolled directly into the Masters program if they have have obtained a Bachelor degree from an approved tertiary education institution, with passes at least at credit level in six courses other than first year courses.

Australian students can apply through the Universities Admissions Centre at: http://www.uac.edu.au/postgraduate.html or with an online application to ANU through http://students.anu.edu.au/apply_online.asp. The closing date for enrolments is December 30, but late enrolments will be accepted, but note there may be delays in processing applications.

MAAPD's Program code is 7101XMAAPD, the Program Code for MAAPD (Gender) is 7101SGENDEV, for MAAPD (Indigenous) 7101SINDPOL, for MAAPD (Society and Environment) is 7101SSOCENV and MAAPD (Conflict) 7101SCONFL. The ANU's CRICOS Provider no. is 00120C.

International Students

Applications from international students are welcome and they can be enrolled if they have a Bachelor's degree from an approved tertiary institution. Applications for First Semester 2010 are now being accepted. International students' application can be made direct to the University using the on line application by going to http://students.anu.edu.au/apply_online.asp and use 'Master of Applied Anthropology' as the search term to find the relevant program. Applications will be accepted up until November 30 but please note that you should allow up to one month to get your study visa.

Candidates from the USA require a GPA of 3.2 or above. The ANU is also a FAFSA Title 4 eligible institution for loans to students from the USA.

Candidates with relevant work experience in development or in developing countries but may not have met the academic requirements, can also gain entry after satisfactory completion of a relevant Graduate Diploma at the ANU - contact course conveners for further details.

English language requirements

To study the Master degree, all international students, unless exempt, should have a satisfactory English language test score-either the International English Language Test (IELTS) or the American Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), including the TOEFL Test of Written English (TWE). The MAAPD entrance requirements in these tests are:

IELTS overall band score of 6.5 with minimum of 6.0 in any component.

Not more than two years should elapse between achieving an appropriate English language test score and application for admission. If you take a TOEFL test, you may have the results sent directly to the University by using the ANU TOEFL institutional code #0506.

Fees

MAAPD is offered on a full fee basis only. Fees are calculated according to the credit points in a course - to view up-to-date fee details for each course, you can follow the link to each course on the course outline page.

Distance Learning

All of the required subjects for MAAPD and for MAAPD (Gender) and MAAPD (Society and Environment) are offered in distance format. For Indigenous Policy and Conflict and Development, the core courses are available on-campus only. For the distance students, as well as others all resources, lecture notes, reading materials and lectures are made available through an interactive web environment, Wattle, that also enables audio streaming. The lecturer is available for consultation through online forums as well as email. High speed broadband access is required to undertake distance learning.

Progress requirements and assessment

Assessment for MAAPD program will be on the basis of essays, assignments, seminars, workshop participation. A university-wide standardized scale of assessment is applied.

That assessment scale is:

High Distinction 80 per cent or more
Distinction 70-79 per cent
Credit 60-69 per cent
Pass 50-59 per cent
Fail less than 50 per cent.
