Research Team

I Wayan Arka

Wayan completed his MPhil at The University of Sydney in 1994 on the Indonesian causative -kan. He continued his PhD at the same University, finishing it in 1998, with research on Balinese morphosyntax and pragmatics. During the course of his PhD, he was a visiting scholar at CSLI, Stanford University (1995). He returned to Udayana University in Bali, Indonesia, for three years before moving again to Australia (April 2001) to take a fellowship at the RSPAS, ANU.

Wayan's interests are in language documentation and description, theoretical and typological aspects of Austronesian languages of Indonesia. In addition to this Indonesian ParGram project, his other projects include:

Jane Simpson

Jane is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics at Sydney University. She is involved in a diverse range of research projects including the following:

  • ACLE: a project on child language acquisition in indigenous communities in Central and Northern Australia. This is a project in collaboration with Gillian Wigglesworth and Patrick McConvell funded by the Australian Research Council.
  • The comparison and reconstruction of languages spoken in the centre of Australia, working with Harold Koch, Luis Hercus, and David Nash.
  • Walpiri Dictionary Project coordinated by Mary Laughren, in collaboration with Christopher Manning.
  • Grammar and dictionary of Warumungu, a language spoken around Tennant Creek.
  • Indigenous place names of Australia, working Luise Hercus and Flavia Hodges.

Avery Andrews

Dr Avery Andrews is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics at ANU. He is well known for his work on syntactic and morphological theory.

Mary Dalrymple

Mary is a Professor in the Centre for Linguistics and Philology at Oxford University. In addition to this project, Mary's research projects include:

  • "Machine-readable grammatical resources for Indonesian", working in conjunction with Suriel Mofu. This project was granted by the Economic and Social Research Council, UK.
  • "Verb-initial grammars: a multilingual/parallel perspective" in collaboration with Louisa Sadler, University of Essex) funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, UK.
  • "Noun phrase agreement and coordination" in collaboration with Louisa Sadler, University of Essex, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board, UK.
