2000 East Nusantara Linguistics Workshop

Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies
Australian National University
Canberra
Australia

21-23 July 2000

The 2000 East Nusantara Linguistics Workshop has been organised with the aim of bringing together linguists who work in the eastern Nusantara region so that they can share the results of their research with each other and make a start on a typology of languages from the area. The major geographic focus of the workshop will be in the area where Central Malayo-Polynesian and South Halmahera - West New Guinea Austronesian languages are spoken, but people who work on non-Austronesian languages from the region, or on languages that have some other connection with those in the region are also invited to participate.

The workshop will be held over three days in Canberra, Australia and will be organised into four consecutive sessions, each addressing a different theme. These sessions will be working sessions in which everyone who attends the conference will be able to participate. The aim of each session will be to seek an overview of the general typology of East Nusantara languages within the parameters of each workshop topic. Organisers have prepared questionnaires for each session, which participants are asked to try to complete as fully as possible before coming to Canberra. The questionnaires can be viewed on line at:

http://rspas.anu.edu.au/linguistics/Conferences/EastNusantara/questionnaires.html

The East Nusantara Linguistics Workshop will be held one week after the completion of ALI 2000 (the Australian Linguistics Institute) in Melbourne. This should enable people from outside Australia to attend both events while they are in the country. See the ALI website for more information about the Institute.

As an outcome of the workshop, we are planning two volumes on the languages of East Nusantara. The first will summarise the results of the workshop. A companion volume will contain sketch grammars and texts from individual languages around the region.P>
