Transnational Environmental Crime

The challenges of transnational environmental crime include illegal logging and timber smuggling, species smuggling, the black market in ozone depleting substances, the illegal movement of toxic and hazardous waste and other prohibited chemicals. As well as the environmental consequences, these forms of illegal activity across borders can involve corruption and financial crime, loss of tax revenue, parallel trading with other forms of criminal activity, and distortion of the licit market. The TEC project at the ANU has a particular but not exclusive focus on the Asia Pacific.

The TEC project is convened by Dr Lorraine Elliott, Senior Fellow in the Department of International Relations: lorraine.elliott@anu.edu.au.
