Student Profile

Kaori Saito, BA (Rikkyo), Grad Cert (Melbourne), MA (ANU)

Kaori Saito Kaori has a background in development studies and completed a MA in International Relations at ANU. Her research interests include the political economy of the Third World, Japan's foreign aid diplomacy and international organisations. Before she came to Australia, Kaori worked for a development agency in Cambodia.

In her Master's thesis, Kaori inquired into external involvement in the integration of West Papua into Indonesia, examining World Bank support for Indonesia's transmigration program in that territory. Her doctoral research examines Japan's foreign aid policy since the end of the Cold War. It will investigate how Japan's aid policy has shifted in the context of the emergence of international standards of development assistance. Building upon the literature on knowledge networks, it will examine how the spread of dominant knowledge concerning development assistance has been reflected in Japan's aid policy.
