The Department of International Relations is committed to postgraduate training of the highest quality, intended to equip scholars to pursue careers as independent thinkers and world-class researchers. To this end it strives to provide a stimulating and supportive intellectual environment conducive to learning and the free exchange of ideas. It respects diverse perspectives on, and approaches to, research and encourages rigorous innovative scholarship. Alumni of the Department have held and continue to hold, Chairs and Full Professorships at many of the world's major universities. Many other of their colleagues have built successful academic careers both overseas and in Australia. Outside academe many have held, and continue to hold, highly rewarding posts in the civil services of their respective countries, in a variety of international non-governmental organisations, and other vocations.
