Facilities

The Department is able to offer unparalleled resources to its research scholars. All PhD students in the Department are provided with office space and a MS Windows computer. Offices are shared, normally on the basis of two students per room depending on numbers and availability of space. Computers are networked to the library, to a number of databases, to mainframe computers and to the Internet. Our PhD students have access to the Department's Reading Room (a non-lending library), which contains an extensive collection of the major journals in the field and other valuable resource material. Students have access to the Department's photocopiers for reasonable photocopying in support of their research. The Department also provides up to A$50 per year per PhD student for access to facilities in the ANU's library system (such as in-library photocopying, inter-library loan or database searches).

A major feature of the Department's support is the provision to each student of up to A$7,000 for fieldwork during the course of their studies (this amount is reviewed each year). Students, however, must apply to the Head of Department who must approve the proposal before any fieldwork funding is allocated.
