Student Profile
Gilberto Estrada Harris, BA (El Colegio de San Luis), MAIR/MDip specialising in Peace and Conflict Studies (ANU-PRIO-Bjorknes)
Gilberto began his PhD research project in September 2007, which deals broadly with the role of diasporas and military humanitarian intervention. His research will investigate how politically active refugee-diasporas might influence their host states' understandings of sovereignty, self-determination and (non)intervention in decisions to intervene in their home states for humanitarian purposes.
Gilberto is currently undertaking a one-year research exchange at Queen Elizabeth House, University of Oxford (St Antony's College), and has recently worked as a research assistant in the Department of International Relations, ANU, and tutored for the Master of Diplomacy AusAID students in the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy, ANU. He is very much interested in humanitarianism(s), the role of refugees and diasporas in peace and conflict, transnationalism, social movements and civil society. In Mexico, Gilberto was producer and anchor of a weekly, guest-interview TV program of international conflict analysis that aired through channel ONCE called 'A tiro de piedra' (A stone's throw) and co-founded an umbrella civil society organisation in defence of the human rights, historical heritage and environment of localities called 'Guardianes de Cerro de San Pedro'.
