Australia and Free Trade Agreements

Thursday 1st November, 1.30 - 5 pm,
Friday 2nd November, 9am - 12.30 pm

Law Link Lecture Theatre
Fellows Road, ANU

Over the past decade, the number of preferential trade agreements (PTAs) in the Asia-Pacific region has mushroomed, with more than 80 currently being implemented, negotiated or under study. Australia has become an increasingly enthusiastic participant in this process with agreements having been concluded with Singapore, Thailand, and the United States, and others under negotiation or consideration with China, Chile, the Gulf Cooperation Council, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and ASEAN (jointly with New Zealand).

What has driven this proliferation of PTAs? How effective are they as instruments of Australian foreign policy? What are the likely economic and political impacts of these agreements? What are the obstacles to Australia's reaching agreements with China and Japan? These are some of the principal questions that this workshop will explore.
