Stuart Harris
Professor Stuart Harris, B Ec (Syd), PhD, held a number of senior government positions before joining the ANU in 1975 as Professor in, later Director of, the Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies. From 1984-1988, on leave from the University, Professor Harris was Secretary of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs (after 1987, Foreign Affairs and Trade). He has been a consultant to many national and international bodies, including UN agencies and has written extensively in the fields of economic, political and strategic policies of, especially, the countries of Northeast Asia and has been closely associated with the development of regional
economic and security cooperation processes, including particularly those of second track organisations, PECC and CSCAP. His research interests include international relations of China and countries of Northeast Asia, Asia-Pacific regional cooperation and Australia's foreign policy. His recent publications have included articles on regional economic cooperation, international environmental issues, regional security issues and the influence of globalisation on the region. The most recent of his major publications was a joint volume with a colleague, Japan and Greater China: Political Economy and Military Power in the Asian Century published by Hurst (London) and the University of Hawaii.
