Orientation - Semester 2, 2009

A warm welcome to all new students of semester 2, 2009 intake.

The orientation day on 14 July was a great opportunity for new students to meet up and interact with academic and administrative staff. Our academic staff, especially Dr Rob Ayson and Dr Brendan Taylor willingly assisted students in providing course information, explaining course structure and answering any queries the students had.

T.B Miller Scholarship

Marisa Bartel, a new student in the GSSD program, has been awarded the T.B. Millar Scholarship for semester 1, 2009. Marisa joins us after completing a Bachelor of International Studies and a Diploma of language (Spanish) at Flinders University of South Australia. In addition to her stellar academic record, Marisa has also studied previously at the University of California, San Diego and has won a number of other scholarships during the course of her undergraduate education.

Valentina Taddeo is also warmly welcomed into the program and joins us as a T.B. Millar Scholarship recipient from semester 2, 2008. Valentina joins GSSD after completing a first class honours Masters degree in foreign language, cultures and international communication from the University of Milan. Valentina has also worked previously at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Congratulations to both recipients.  As is traditionally the case, a cocktail evening will be held at the end of the first semester to formally award T.B. Millar scholarships to Marisa and Valentina.

Kokoda Foundation Essay Winners

Three former GSSD students have been awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize in the 2008 Kokoda Essay Competition.  Richard Maher received first prize for his essay on the implications of the US elections on the US-Australia Alliance.  Roy McDowall received second prize with his essay titled ‘The Strategic Depiction of China in Howard Government Policy’.  Third prize was awarded to Yusuke Ishihara with his essay ‘Partnership Adrift: Reshaping Australia-Japan Strategic Relations’.  Congratulations to the three of them.

Kioloa Retreat March 2009

The annual Kioloa retreat was held on March 22-24, 2009. This year, students put their strategic and negotiation skills to good use in taking part in a two day war game. The program also included after-dinner talks, by Frank Lewincamp and Paul Dibb, who talked about careers in defence and the geopolitical implications of the global financial crisis.

Book Launch

The Minister for Defence, the Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon MP, launched A History of Australian Strategic Policy since 1945 on March 16, 2009. The book contains commentary and an introductory essay by Dr Stephan Frühling on it’s primary contents, which includes a collection of declassified strategic defence documents that shed light on Australia’s defence and strategic policy for the period of 1946 to 1976. “Dr Frühling’s timely and comprehensive work provides a valuable academic commentary to these historical papers,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

Congratulations Stephan on such a big achievement.
