Scholarships

Each year several students have their GSSD studies supported by various funding organizations. Here are some of the main scholarship options for outstanding domestic and international candidates.

GSSD T.B. Millar Scholarships

Each year the GSSD Program awards a limited number of T B Millar Scholarships to outstanding full-time scholars. These are named after T B (Tom) Millar, the foundation head of the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, and a major figure in the development of strategic studies in Australia. These partial scholarships equate to 24 units of your program (equivalent to one full-time semester). Domestic and international applicants, as well as current GSSD students, are eligible to apply. Australian Government Scholarships

Australian Leadership Awards:

These scholarships bring together the AusAID managed Australian Development Scholarships (see details below), the Department of Education, Science and Training's Endeavour Awards and a new regional development assistance program. Australian Development Scholarships (funded by AUSAID)

The Australian Government foreign aid program provides a limited number of scholarships for international students from developing countries to study in Australia. Scholarships may be available for students from a number of countries in the South Pacific, Southeast Asia, North Asia, South Asia and Africa. Eligibility and selection criteria vary from country to country. Applicants need to request application forms and information from the Australian Diplomatic Mission or the Australian Education Centre in their home country. Defence Cooperation Program Funding

The Australian Department of Defence provides funding for defence force personnel from a range of Asia-Pacific regional countries to undertake postgraduate studies in Australia, including Masters degrees in strategic studies. For information please contact the Australian defence advisor at the Australian Diplomatic Mission in your country.

ANU Scholarships

While many ANU postgraduate scholarships are designed for doctoral students, the university scholarship webpage also lists scholarships which may be applicable for graduate coursework programs such as GSSD. Please visit ANU Graduate Scholarships

Other Scholarships

Freyberg Scholarships (New Zealand Defence Scholarships):

These scholarships, named after Lord Freyberg, allow New Zealand students to undertake overseas study on national security. Preference may be given to applicants who are intending to join the GSSD Program from which a number of Freyberg Scholars have graduated in recent years. For information on the Freyberg Scholarships, which are administered by the New Zealand Vice Chancellor’s Committee.
