2008 Graduation Ceremony - Semester 2

   

Graduating GSSD Students had their degrees conferred at a ceremony on Thursday, 11 December 2008 at 10 am and then celebrated with their guests and GSIA Graduates at a reception in the atrium on the Hedley Bull Centre.  Congratulations to all graduates and best wishes for your future careers.

GSSD Cocktail Evening



On October 24, 2008, approximately 50 people gathered for the end of semester cocktail evening held at Teatro Vivaldi Restaurant. The warm ambience and tasty food made for a delightful evening of mingling, and celebrating the accomplishments of students and staff during  the year. In particular, attention was drawn to Campbell Micallef for his outstanding academic achievements. He is the T.B. Millar Scholarship Award recipient for Semester 2, 2008. Congratulations to Campbell, and all the other students for their hard work throughout the semester. Best wishes to students for their upcoming exams.

Official Opening of The Hedley Bull Centre



On August 6, 2008, the Hedley Bull Centre was officially opened by The Hon. Kevin Rudd, Prime Minister of Australia and ANU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Chubb. Over 180 dignitaries, students and staff gathered to celebrate the new academic environment, and to honor the contributions of Professor Hedley Bull, whose wife, Ms. Mary Bull, was in attendance. The Prime Minister had an opportunity to tour the new facilities and meet some of the GSSD students including Ms. JJ Chen, who is pictured in the photo.

2008 Graduation Ceremony - Semester 1



On July 17, 2008, a ceremony took place at Llewellyn Hall to celebrate the achievements of the recent 2008 graduates from the College of Asia and the Pacific, including students from the GSSD program. Congratulations and best wishes to all GSSD graduates!

GSSD Orientation Day



On Tuesday, July 15, 2008, GSSD had the opportunity to welcome new students at the GSSD Orientation Day. Best wishes to all new and continuing students as you begin a new academic semester!  

The new move - The Hedley Bull Centre

The GSSD Program has recently relocated to the newest major facility on ANU Campus, The Hedley Bull Centre. Beginning in semester two 2008, GSSD students will have the opportunity to take advantage of 'state of the art' learning facilities in The Hedley Bull Centre. Housed together with the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy, the Department of International Relations and the Department of Political and Social Change, the dynamic social space will allow both students and staff to interact within and across academic units in a more open and accessible manner.

The Hedley Bull Centre is located on the corner of Garran Road and Liversidge Street. Parking is usually available in the University House Carpark, located directly across from the Hedley Bull Centre. Students are welcome to explore the new facility and visit GSSD staff located on the third floor.

GSSD Cocktail Evening May 2008


On Friday, May 30, 2008, over 55 students and staff of the GSSD program gathered at Teatro Vivaldi's restaurant to unwind and celebrate their academic achievements after a demanding first semester. The cocktail evening was also an opportunity to congratulate the newest T.B. Millar Scholarship recipient, Enrico Fels, for his outstanding academic performance during the program. Best of luck to all continuing and new students as the new semester begins.

GSSD Kioloa Retreat March 2008



55 students and staff members attended GSSD's 7th annual retreat to Kioloa, the Australian National University's pristine site on the New South Wales south coast from March 16-18, 2008. Events included seminars and workshops entitled 'Is Putin starting a new Cold War?', 'Complex Stability and Resilience', 'China and the SIOP', 'Economic Sanctions and the Great Powers', and 'India and the Asian Century'. A panel discussion on 'Strategic Policy Challenges for the New Government' gave students an opportunity to reflect on the security challenges of Australia's future.

GSSD Team visits China


Robert Ayson, Brendan Taylor and Ping Yu, along with Ron Huisken of SDSC visited China in April 2007. They participated in the East Asian Security Architecture workshop hosted by the China Foundation for International and Strategic Studies and presented a seminar on Asian Security issues to students at Peking (Beida) University. Links were also strengthened by a visit to the China Scholarship Council.
