CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

Changing Pacific Masculinities: Engendering Future Security

Graduate Scholars and Early Career Researchers Workshop, 29th November 2005.

Expressions of interest are sought from graduate students and early career researchers, who are resident in Australia, for a one-day workshop on Changing Pacific Masculinities: Engendering Future Security. The workshop will be held on the 29th of November in conjunction with the international conference Moving Masculinities: Crossing Regional and Historical Borders (November 30-December 2), and hosted by the Gender Relations Centre, RSPAS, at The Australian National University.

Although there has been a lot of scholarly research and policy debate on 'failed states', human security and good governance in the Pacific region, much of this has taken masculinity for granted. Insufficient attention has been paid to the changing cultures of masculinities over generations, and to the way in which past practices and values have been reconfigured in an era of political turmoil, burgeoning mining and logging industries, increasing migration and mobility, and the pervasive influence of global electronic media on local images of masculinity. This workshop aims to encourage comparative and interdisciplinary dialogue on such questions across several Pacific states, and in relation to Australia.

The workshop will;
  • bring together researchers working across several Pacific states, working on issues of masculinity in relation to public and domestic violence, migration and mobility, good governance and prospects for peace and security
  • create a supportive environment for postgraduates and early career researchers to present their research and to network with senior scholars
  • offer mentoring for postgraduates and early career researchers, in preparing their papers for a conjoint publication
  • establish networks linking scholars with policy makers and practitioners in government and NGOs.

The Gender Relations Centre has secured funds from the Australian Research Council Asia Pacific Futures Research Network to provide financial support for a number of graduate students and early career researchers. Financial assistance for airfares, up to four nights accommodation in Canberra, and for registration fees to attend the conference Moving Masculinities are available on a competitive basis. It is envisaged that workshop participants will pre-circulate a 5000-word paper by November 15. Interested participants should send a 200-word abstract of proposed papers and a one-page curriculum vitae by August 31 to:

Successful participants will be notified by September 16th.
