In Pursuit of Images and Shadows: A Chinese Adoptee Journeys in Search of Her Ancestral Past
Dr. Mei-Mei Akwai Ellerman

Resident Scholar, Brandeis University

Mei-Mei Akwai Ellerman, adopted in the US by her biracial mother, Elsa Oiesen Bement (1900-1994), will share highlights from a decade-long quest for compelling connections to her Chinese grandmother, Akwai Yang (1866-1942) and her Danish grandfather, James Frederick Oiesen (1857-1928), Commissioner for the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs (1879-1920) and Danish Ambassador to China (1921-23). Her account will cover exhaustive archival research, serendipitous encounters, and revelations of deeply guarded family secrets, discovered in the course of travels to Denmark, Thailand, Korea and five trips to China.
