Preparing a Budget

A good budget needs careful consideration of all the resources needed to carry out the project. Under- or over-estimating is a mistake. Here's some steps to follow in preparing a grant budget.

What will the scheme pay for?

  • Check their guidelines - they tell you.
  • Budgets may include direct costs like
    • salaries (fellows & research assistants),
    • equipment,
    • travel (fares, accommodation and living allowances)
    • and printing/publication costs
    • It might also include indirect costs.

What are Indirect Costs?
They are essentially service costs - insurances, accounting, libraries, buildings, your office computer, the provision of this web site and everything it links to. There is a formula to
calculate these costs. If the funding agency allows indirect costs, it is compulsory to include them in your request for funding.
