GSIA Study Centre
The GSIA Study Centre is located in the Coombs Extension. Access is available 24-hours a day, seven days a week by
swipe-card, using your student ID card. Access permissions will be
set at the start of each semester. For any access problems, please
contact Craig.
The computers are all Windows desktops with Microsoft Office and
other standard software. There is also access to a laser printer.
(Macintosh computers are available at various InfoCommons
sites around the ANU campus.)
Help with computer problems is available in the department by contacting the
Division of Information, phone 6125 9666.
For training on a wide range of computer applications, as well
as research techniques and other matters, please check out the ANU
Information Literacy Program.
Please note that your use of computers at ANU is governed by a
number of official policies, including Acceptable
Use of Communication and Information Systems. Students using
the Study Centre computers are not permitted to download music or
movies, engage in video chat, or install any software. Study Centre
computers are monitored by RSPAS IT Services, and improper usage
will be reported. If you need to download something or install software
for your work, please contact the GSIA
office.
Lockers
Storage lockers are located in the GSIA Study Centre, and are available
to GSIA students.
To be allocated a locker, please contact the GSIA Office.

Email & Communication
University email addresses are
created automatically for students at the time of enrolment. University
email accounts are of the form u1234567@anu.edu.au, and are the
official email contact address for staff and students. You must
check your ANU email regularly, as official correspondence
is often sent to this address. [ANU iGuide]
As with ANU more generally, so here in the GSIA: the main method
of communication between the program and students is email, and
we will assume that you are checking your STUDENT email frequently.
You can arrange to forward your ANU email to a personal or work
account, via the University's online account management system,
OLAMS. For more information,
see the Student
iGuide. Please note that it is your responsibility to check
your email and to insure that any forwarding you put in place functions
correctly.
If students require dial-in access from home they should contact
Lynne
Payne.
Mail, Messages and Notices
A notice board is located on the wall outside the GSIA office. Notices for events, scholarships, etc. appear
on this notice board; as a general rule, all such notices
will be sent out by email as well.
Students may post appropriate notices in the Study Centre or on
the whiteboard in the computer lab.

The J. D. B. Miller Reading Room
The J. D. B. Miller Reading Room (Room 2.26) receives most of the more prominent
journals covering international affairs. The Reading Room is a central
resource for staff and PhD students in the department, as well as
the central meeting point for the Department. GSIA students also
have access to this valuable resource.
It should be noted that the Reading Room is not open after hours
or on weekends and that journals must not be removed from the room. Photocopying facilities are available in the Reading Room. (Most of the
journals are also available in the Menzies or Chifley libraries.)
GSIA Library
The GSIA Library is located in the J. D. B. Miller Reading Room (Room
2.26) in the Hedley Bull Centre. Opening hours: 8am-5pm Monday to
Friday
Photocopying Access
Photocopying is available in the J. D. B. Miller Reading Room
at a cost of 20 cents per copy. We ask, therefore, that students
only get a pin number (from Mary-Louise Hickey in Room 2.27) if
they are actually going to use the photocopier.

Bicycles
Canberra is a very bicycle-friendly city and bikes provide one
of the most reliable and economical forms of transportation - not
too mention being environmentally sound.
ANU has a network of bicycles that can be borrowed for temporary
daytime use - the Timely
Tredlies Program.
The Hedley Bull Building has numerous bike racks and also a bike shed
with a combination lock. If you would like access to the bike shed,
please see a member of staff in the GSIA Administrator's Office.
Please do not lock your bike to any posts or railings around the
Coombs Building or the Hedley Bull Building, especially the posts outside Coombs Extension and
the Coombs Lecture Theatre, and handrails on stairs; this constitutes
a safety hazard and your bike lock will be cut and your bike removed.
For general information on bicycling in Canberra, see Pedal
Power ACT.
The ANU
Bicycle Cooperative is another excellent resource for students.
It is open 9-12.30 Mondays to Thursdays in the old building down
on Lennox Crossing. Cooperative membership is open to anyone. Members
have access to bicycle tools and skills workshops. For those searching
for second hand bikes the Co-op will be selling them for $50 (with
a $30 refund on return of the bike). Bikes can also be earned through
volunteer hours.

GSIA Intranet
The GSIA Intranet is a password-protected section
of the GSIA website containing important information for current
students, staff and members of the GSIA community, such as student
biographies and materials for download. It can be accessed via the
link at the top of all GSIA web pages.

Course Information
Course Guides (Syllabuses)
Course guides can be accessed via WebCT
for the specific course, through the GSIA Intranet and on the GSIA flashdrive (USB).
Course Texts and Required
Reading
From Semester 2, 2009, all of the required reading for GSIA courses
will be provided on the GSIA flashdrive (USB).
Students may print out copies of required readings on University
printers, using their printing allowance.
Some courses recommend text books. These
can be purchased from The
Co-op Bookshop, located in the Union
Court area, at the start of each semester.
Most of the required reading as well as the supplementary/recommended
reading will also be available through the ANU
Library or the National
Library of Australia.
WebCT
For Semester 2 2009, WebCT, alongside the GSIA flashdrive, will be the standard
platform for all students to access such things as course guides,
library materials, timetables and a variety of study tools. It will
also be the sole method of submitting your essays. Enrolled students
may gain access with a username and password
and are expected to become familiar with its use. Introductions
and special assistance will be available if needed. Please read
the following instructions regarding the use of WebCT.
Access as well as further information and guidelines are available
at the WebCT
site.

ANU Resources for Students
Academic Skills Assistance
The University provides excellent professional assistance with study
skills and essay and exam preparation through the Academic
Skills and Learning Centre, located in the Pauline
Griffin Building. There is special assistance available for students
with English as a second language. Students may make an appointment
with an Adviser by phoning the Centre Administrator on 6125 2972.
The Centre provides a series of seminars at the beginning of first
and second semester on studying and writing, and these are highly
recommended to GSIA students (particularly those who have been away
from academic writing for some time). Accommodation
University Accommodation Services (UAS) operates as the first point
of contact for all accommodation enquiries. All applications for
accommodation should be directed to the UAS in the first instance.
If you need single accommodation, you have a choice of catered and
self-catered Halls and Colleges or the option of renting private
accommodation off the campus.
For information on how to apply for accommodation at the ANU, and
other accommodation available in Canberra, please visit University
Accommodation Services
Counselling
The University has a very friendly and effective counselling service.
Students experiencing excessive stress or anxiety in relation to their
studies or other personal problems should contact the University
Counselling Centre, phone 6125 2442.
