Analysing the Indonesian Election Results
Marcus Mietzner, Edward Aspinall and Greg Fealy, (Faculty of Asian Studies, Political & Social Change, Faculty of Asian Studies & Dept of Political and Social Change, ANU)

On 9 April, up to 171 million Indonesians voted in the third legislative election since the downfall of Soeharto's New Order regime. Although only about 10% of votes have been tallied by the Election Commission, quick count polling by respected survey organisations have provided indicative figures on the likely outcome. Marcus Mietzner will examine the overall significance of these results for Indonesia's democratic consolidation as well as their impact on the upcoming presidential elections. Ed Aspinall will consider the poll results from Aceh, the only province where 'local' parties were allow to contest for regional legislature seats. Greg Fealy will focus on the performance of Islamic parties, paying particular attention to the reasons for the declining support for all but one of these parties
