Visiting Fellowships and Cushman Prize (both international)
for the Study of the Chinese Southern Diaspora

The Centre will provide funds for a visiting fellow for one semester every year with an amount of up to $7500. It is to support younger scholars working on the Chinese in SEA and Australia at graduate level. This endowment money is generously provided by the bequests of two late scholars who devoted their lives and careers to the study of the overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia, Jennifer Cushman and Ben Batson.

The Centre will also launch an annual Cushman Prize (A$500) for the best book or best PhD thesis on the history of the Chinese Southern Diaspora. The guidelines are coming soon on this site.

Between 1 March and 1 June 2005. the centre's visiting scholar was Dr. Paul Van Dyke. He worked with Dr Li Tana on the 18th and early 19th cntury Canton trade with Southeast Asia.
