At Monday’s ANU China Update, a distinguished guest made a surprise appearance: Kevin Rudd popped in for the final session. The PM listened to Ross Garnaut summing up the day, then gave an inspired speech about the importance of good scholarship for good policymaking, and his government’s aim to make Australia the best in the west for understanding Asia. Makes you feel good working in that area!
A personal achievement there for me, possibly bringing me that crucial step closer to salvation, is sharing The Age’s front page with the pope. OK, he’s got his photo and I only rate a brief mention over the fold, but still! ![]()

Dammit, Frank, now I’ve cricked my neck trying to read that front page. Otherwise you would have got a Christmas bonus. Did the Pope pop in as well?

Two encounters with important people (front page sharing counts as an encounter!) in a week. Does that mean you’re famous by association???
