Asia Pacific Week

Asia Pacific Week 2009
Building Australia's Asia Pacific Expertise
ANU Campus 27 - 30 January

The Japanese Studies Graduate Summer School (JSGSS) is a week-long program of intensive research activities designed to bring together PhD, research masters and, where possible, potential Honours students from around Australia. This event provides a wonderful opportunity for research students to present their theory or argument in a friendly and professional environment and to develop an international and inter-disciplinary network. This year, the opportunity is also open to Honours students to observe the workshop without giving paper presentation in the hope that the experience will benefit their future studies. A limited number of scholarships are available on application to cover speakers' accommodation, meal and travel costs (for observers, accommodation and meal costs only).
The broad goals for the week are to provide a forum for building networks among postgraduate scholars through the exchange of knowledge and experiences surrounding the study of Japan. The program also aims to provide students around Australia with the opportunity to use the rich and diverse Japanese-language resources held at the ANU and the National Library of Australia. The JSGSS coincides with ANU's Asia-Pacific Week during which a range of evening social and cultural activities will be held.
Hosts for the program will comprise experienced Japanese Studies researchers and scholars drawn from among the ANU's staff. ANU has over 30 Japanese specialists across a diverse range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences on its academic staff.
ANU Japan scholars who may act as Discussion and Workshop leaders  include: Dr Tomoko Akami, Professor Kent Anderson, Professor Jenny Corbett, Dr Carol Hayes, Dr Peter Hendriks, Dr Yusaku Horiuchi, Dr Shunichi Ishihara, Professor Rikki Kersten, Dr Duck-Young Lee, Dr Narangoa Li, Dr Hitoshi Nasu, Dr Kazuki Onji, and Dr Keiko Tamura. Japanese-language specialist staff from the ANU and librarians Toshio Takagi and Mayumi Shinozaki will also participate.
Participation in the Japanese Studies Graduate Summer School will enable students to:

  • Meet and exchange ideas with their peers around Australia
  • Forge networks with other postgraduate students from around Australia
  • Establish links with key ANU scholars as informal on-going mentors
  • Gain feedback on work in progress
  • Develop techniques for conducting effective fieldwork in Japan
  • Learn skills for efficient publication of research results

  • Draw on the knowledge of the expert Japanese specialist librarians at the ANU and National Library of Australia
