VIETNAM STUDIES GRADUATE SUMMER SCHOOL
The ANU Vietnam Studies Graduate Summer School (VSGSS) is a week-long program of intensive workshops designed to bring together research students undertaking PhD, Masters and Honours degrees in Australia and the region. This event provides a wonderful opportunity for students to present their proposals, findings or argument in a friendly and professional environment and to develop an international and inter-disciplinary network.
A limited number of scholarships are available on application to cover speakers' accommodation, meal and travel costs.
The broad goals
of the week are to provide a forum for building of networks among postgraduate scholars through the exchange of knowledge and experiences surrounding the study of Vietnam. The program also aims to provide students with the opportunity to use the rich and diverse resources on Vietnam held at the ANU and the Australian National Library. The VSGSS coincides with the ANU Asia-Pacific week during which a range of evening social and cultural activities will be held.
Hosts for the program
will comprise experienced Vietnam researchers and scholars drawn from among the ANU's staff. ANU has the biggest number of Vietnam specialists in Australia on its academic staff with expertise across a diverse range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences.
Workshops leaders will include:
Dr. Bao Duy Thai, Dr. Ashley Carruthers, Dr Judith Cameron, Dr. Nola Cooke, Dr Kim Huynh, Dr. Tom Kompas, Dr. Suiwah Leung, Professor David G. Marr, Dr. Paul Sidwell, Dr. Li Tana and Dr. Philip Taylor. Renata Osborne and Thanh Nguyen of the ANU library will also lead sessions.
Participation in the Vietnam Studies Graduate Summer School will enable students to:
- Meet and exchange ideas with their peers around Australia
- Forge networks with other postgraduate students from around Australia
- Establish links with key ANU scholars as informal on-going mentors
- Gain feedback on work in progress
- Develop techniques for conducting effective fieldwork in Vietnam
- Strengthen insights into key theoretical challenges for Vietnamese Studies today
- Make use of the Vietnamese language resources of the ANU and the National Library of Australia
- Draw on the knowledge of the expert Vietnamese specialist librarians ANU and National Library of Australia
Program Outline
Roundtable discussions
Provisional topics for discussion include:
- Student life: studying Vietnam in Australian universities
- In the field: doing research in Vietnam
- After graduation: prospects for Vietnam studies scholars
Master Class Workshops
- Open to any research fields in Vietnamese studies.
- Workshop sessions will be arranged by theme according to student interests
- Students present 20 minute papers on work in progress or key research problems, followed by discussion and feedback from peers and experts
Individual Consultations
- Opportunities will be made available for students to consult with individual ANU staff about their research projects.
Other Events
Other events will include public lectures by keynote speakers, film screenings, library resource guidance sessions and cultural performances.
Accommodation
- Participants in Asia-Pacific Week, including those in the VSGSS, will be housed at John XXIII College, on ANU's campus.

ANU Asia-Pacific Week
The Asia-Pacific week will feature special events such as keynote speeches, films, performances and exhibitions. Participants at the VSGSS will interact with participants from other summer schools in combined social functions.
Location
The VSGSS will be held on the ANU campus.
Scholarships
A number of scholarships will be provided to graduate students who give a presentation on their research. These scholarships will cover the cost of accommodation and part of the travel expenses.
A limited number of scholarships are available for Masters or Honours students who wish to observe the workshop without giving a formal presentation. Masters and Honours students should be prepared to speak for about 10 minutes about their current study and future research interests.
Application
Individuals who wish to participate in the VSGSS need to express their interest by submitting an application form, along with a 250 word abstract of their presentation at the VSGSS, to the program conveners.
