The ANU Vietnam Studies Summer School (VSSS)
is a week-long program of intensive research activities designed to
bring together scholars working on Vietnam throughout Australia and New
Zealand to exchange knowledge and experience and to access the
scholarly resources pf Australia's pre-eminent center for scholarship
on Vietnam.
The broad goals of
the week are to provide a forum for building of networks among
postgraduate scholars through the exchange of knowledge and experiences
surrounding the study of Vietnam. The program also aims to provide
students around Australia and New Zealand with the opportunity to use
the rich and diverse resources on Vietnam held at the ANU and the
Australian National Library. The VSSS coincides with ANU's Asia-Pacific
week during which a range of evening social and cultural activities
will be held.
Hosts for the program will comprise experienced
Vietnam researchers and scholars drawn from among the ANU's staff. ANU
has the biggest number of Vietnam specialists across a diverse range of
disciplines within the humanities and social sciences in Australia on
its academic staff.
Workshops leaders will include:
- Dr. Ashley Carruthers (Urban Anthropology)
- Dr. Nola Cooke (17th – 19th century history, trade, religion)
- Professor Amareswar Galla (Cultural heritage, culture and development)
- Professor Ben Kerkvliet (Political science, state/society relations, comparative politics)
- Dr. Tom Kompas (Economics)
- Dr. Suiwah Leung (Economics)
- Professor David G. Marr (History, intellectuals, 20th century revolution and warfare, political culture)
- Dr. Paul Sidwell (Comparative Linguistics, Mon-Khmer and ethnic languages)
- Dr. Li Tana (17th and 18th century Vietnamese and Southeast Asian history)
- Dr. Philip Taylor (Anthropology, cultural history, ethnic studies)
- Dr. Bao Duy Thai (Linguistics, Vietnamese Language)
- Renata Osborne and Thanh Nguyen (ANU library) will also lead sessions.
Participation in the Vietnam Studies Summer School will enable students to:
- Meet and exchange ideas with their peers working on similar topics in universities around Australia and New Zealand
- Establish links with key ANU scholars as informal on-going mentors
- Gain feedback on proposed and current research projects from ANU-based Vietnam studies specialists
- Strengthen insights into key theoretical challenges for Vietnam Studies today
- Make use of the Vietnamese language resources of the ANU and the National Library of Australia
Out-of-town participants in Asia-Pacific Week, including those in
the VSSS, will be housed at John XXIII College on ANU's campus. A continental
breakfast is provided as part of the accommodation package.
Places in the ANU Vietnam Studies Summer School are limited to 20.
Applicants are required to submit a letter (2 pages maximum) to the selection committee
no later than 21 Oct 2005 as detailed on the
Asia Pacific web page for scholarship applications.
Applicants will be advised of the success of their applications before 11 Nov 2005.
The venue will be various locations on the ANU campus.
ANU Asia Pacific Week
The 2006 ANU-VSSS is to be held in conjunction with summer schools
in China Studies, Thai Studies, Indonesian Studies, Korea Studies,
Pacific Island Studies and Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Studies. The
Asia-Pacific week will feature special events such as keynote speeches,
films, performances and exhibitions. Participants at the VSSS will
interact with participants from other summer schools in combined social
functions.
