KOREAN GRADUATE STUDIES CONFERENCE
January 31 - February 4 2005
Common Room, 4th floor of the Baldessin Precinct Building, ANU.
Modeled to some degree on the Harvard Korea Institute's Annual Graduate Student Conference, the First Korean Graduate Studies Conference was held in February 2004, with the generous support of the Korea Foundation. The Second Korean Graduate Studies Conference (KGSC) will be held during the week beginning 31 January 2005.
At the ANU, the conference will be supported administratively and financially by the ANU Centre for Korean Studies, the National Institute for Asia and the Pacific, and the newly established International Centre for Excellence for the Asia-Pacific.
The aims of the Korean Graduate Studies Conference are: (a) to provide a forum for graduate students devoted to the study of Korea to share their findings in a supportive and encouraging environment; and (b) to promote scholarly interest in Korea in Australia and the region.
In support of the first aim, the Conference will include the following elements.
- Korean Studies graduate students will deliver papers in which their topics, findings, challenges and achievements will be presented, followed by discussion. The talks will be chaired by established academics drawn from the region, who will also serve as discussants of the papers delivered, commenting on disciplinary and methodological matters arising. In this way, the Conference will be of maximum assistance to the graduate students in their pursuit of knowledge and understanding.
- Because the Conference will be held in conjunction with the Australian National University's Asia Week, at which graduate students studying other Asian traditions will be presenting papers, the Korean Studies graduate students will not only gain a sense of their belonging to a much broader academic community, but will have ample opportunity to learn directly of approaches and methods employed in pursuit of topics similar to their own.
- The Korean Studies graduate students will be given tours of the ANU Menzies Library and the National Library of Australia, at which are held a combined total of some 40,000 volumes of works on Korea in Korean. This is the largest Korean collection in the entire region, and ranks among the top 8 collections outside Korea around the world.
- We will award two prizes to the three finest graduate papers delivered at this Conference.
In regard to the second aim, the holding of this Conference in conjunction with the ANU Asia-Pacific Week activities is the most important element. In February this year, over 180 scholars, including graduate students, attended the week of activities, and it is expected that a similar number will participate in February 2005. The activities are aimed at informing the nation of the depth of expertise that exists on Asia, sharing experiences in research and teaching, and promoting interest in Asia at academic, business, government, media and public community levels.
The Korean Studies graduate students and academic specialists who attend our Conference will be encouraged to join in these activities, so that Korean studies and expertise is given a strong profile and is viewed as an integral and important part of the wider Asian studies community.
The following academics have already given firm commitments to participate as workshop discussants at the conference.
- Dr Ruth Barraclough (Sydney)
- Dr Tatiana Gabroussenko (ANU)
- Dr Lee Duk-Young (ANU)
- Dr Suh Chung-Sok (UNSW)
