CHINESE STUDIES GRADUATE SUMMER SCHOOL

The Chinese Studies Graduate Summer School (CSGSS) is a week-long program of intensive research activities designed to bring together PhD and research masters students from around Australia.
The broad goals for the week are to provide a forum for building networks among postgraduate scholars through the exchange of knowledge and experiences surrounding the study of China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The program also aims to provide students around Australia with the opportunity to use the rich and diverse Chinese-language resources held at the ANU and the Australian National Library. The CSGSS coincides with ANU's Asia-Pacific week during which a range of evening social and cultural activities will be held.
Hosts for the program will comprise experienced Chinese Studies researchers and scholars drawn from among the ANU's staff. ANU has over 40 Chinese specialists across a diverse range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences on its academic staff.
Discussion and workshop leaders will include: Dr Børge Bakken, Professor Geremie Barmé, Dr Louise Edwards, Dr Tamara Jacka, Dr Andrew Kipnis, Professor Kam Louie, Dr Kathryn Morton, Dr Benjamin Penny, Dr Luigi Tomba, Dr Peter Van Ness and Professor Jon Unger. Chinese-language specialist staff from the ANU and ANL libraries Renata Osborne and Wan Wong will also lead sessions.

- Forge networks with other PhD students from around Australia
- Establish links with key ANU scholars as informal on-going mentors
- Gain feedback on work in progress
- Develop techniques for conducting effective fieldwork in China
- Learn skills for efficient publication of research results
- Strengthen insights into key theoretical challenges for Chinese Studies today
- Draw on the knowledge of the expert Chinese specialist librarians ANU and ANL

Master Class Project Workshops
- Students present 15-20 minute papers on work in progress or key research problems
- Discussion and feedback from peers and experts
Individual Consultations
- Opportunities will be made available for students to consult with individual ANU staff about their research projects.
Accommodation
- Participants in Asia-Pacific Week, including those in the CSGSS, will be housed at Bruce Hall on ANU's campus.
- $62.50/night also covers 3 meals each day

ANU Asia Pacific Week
The 2005 CSGSS is to be held in conjunction with summer schools in Thai Studies, Indonesian Studies, Korea Studies, Pacific Island Studies, Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Studies, Japan Studies and South Asia Studies. The Asia-Pacific week will feature special events such as keynote speeches, films, performances and exhibitions. Participants at the CSGSS will interact with participants from other summer schools in combined social functions.
