Visitors

The Anthropology Department has long been a 'Mecca' for anthropologists of the Pacific and Asia, attracting numerous scholars every year from around the world during their sabbaticals or for shorter visits periods of study to take advantage of the considerable resources of the Department, RSPAS and the ANU. There are numerous categories of "visitor": Visiting Fellows, Departmental Visitors, and Visiting Scholars. Interested applicants should contact the Head of Department for further information.

Visitors to the Department of recent years are listed in our Annual Reports.

Visiting Fellows

Visiting Fellows are established academics who visit the Department for relatively longer periods (e.g. one month or more) to pursue their research interests. Visiting Fellow applications are approved by the Department and by a committee of the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies.

The formal application for appointment as Visiting Fellow is addressed directly to the HOD and normally consists of a brief statement of research plans to be undertaken during a specified period of affiliation with the Department plus an up-to-date CV.

Departmental Visitors

Departmental Visitors are normally academics whose visits to the Department for research purposes are of relatively short duration.

Applications for appointment as Departmental Visitor are approved internally by the Department and consist of a brief statement of research plans, term of appointment, and current CV.

Visiting Scholars

Graduate students enrolled at other Australian universities or overseas are eligible to apply for affiliation with the Anthropology Department as Visiting Scholars. As Visiting Scholars, graduate students can avail themselves of the resources of the Department, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, the ANU or the wider Canberra region, usually for periods of between several weeks to a few months. Applications addressed to the Head of Department consist of brief statement of research goals, dates of affiliation, current CV, and letter of support from PhD supervisor. Contact the departmental administrator for additional information; anthropology.rspas@anu.edu.au.

Facilities for Visitors

The Department provides visitors with shared access to PC computers and office space (as available), library privileges, email, the web, fax, and photocopying. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own laptop computers to continue their research and writing while in residence.

In return for the support they receive, Visitors are expected to participate in seminars, to consult with interested graduate students, and to participate in the general life of the Department during their stays. Also they are expected to report promptly on any publications resulting from the research they conduct while in residence.
