Graduate Programme in Anthropology at the ANU

As part of the Research Programme in Anthropology at the ANU, the Department of Anthropology RSPAS provides professional training leading to the doctorate (PhD) and two master's degrees, the Master's of Philosophy in Anthropology (Mphil) and the Masters in Applied Anthropology and Participatory Development (MAAPD).

Most of the Anthropology Department's postgraduate students are enrolled in the PhD programme. The principal qualification for this degree is the submission of thesis involving original research based upon 3.5 years of full-time study. In nearly all cases, PhD students in Anthropology undertake intensive ethnographic fieldwork in Asian or Pacific locations for 1 to 1.5 years with financial support provided by the Department.
