Influences on Cultural Development

Prehistoric Monument on Tonga

Archaeologists have proposed many factors as drivers for the development and maintenance of cultural complexity. Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands cultures had and continue to have a wide variety of forms, from extremely hierarchical chiefdoms to band-level hunter-gatherers. An improved understanding of the environmental, social, and historical factors that led to this variety is critical to assessing the validity and importance of a wide range of anthropological hypotheses.
